Abstract
After invasive implant placement, an active healing process is essential for new bone formation and ultimately successful implant prostheses. Previous in vitro studies have revealed that this healing event is mediated by the surrounding cells and the absorbed protein layer in the extracellular matrix. In particular, the compound effect of implant surface characteristics such as roughness and topography plays a major role during the initial phase of the biological response to implants. Therefore, a better understanding of in vivo response of an implant is critical for determining its biocompatibility and osseointegration. This literature review evaluates the in vivo interaction between the implant surface characteristics and the surrounding cells mediated by the adsorbed protein layer.
